Canada’s Startup Visa Program

After the application is approved, a Canada PR visa is issued. It includes a Confirmation of Permanent Residence (COPR) and an entry visa.

Business Innovation and Investment (Permanent) visa (subclass 888): This visa is aimed at business owners, entrepreneurs, and investors who want to expand their business activities in Australia.

Business Owner visa (subclass 890): This visa is aimed at international individuals who own or manage a business venture in Australia.

State or Territory Sponsored Business Owner visa (subclass 892): This visa is issued to foreign nationals who own and operate a business in Australia. It allows the individual to live in Australia indefinitely.

The Entrepreneur stream under Australia's Business Innovation and Investment (Provisional) visa allows you to operate a business or conduct business investment or entrepreneurial activity in Australia.

Eligibility requirements

  • Have a comprehensive proposal for an entrepreneurial activity in Australia
  • Have a funding agreement of at least AUD 200,000 to sponsor your business in Australia
  • Have a detailed business plan for your startup venture in Australia
  • Have the required proficiency in the English language

The primary categories of the provisional visa program are given below.

1. Business Innovation Stream: This stream facilitates establishing or purchasing a new business in Australia. You must be nominated by a State or territory government agency or Austrade in Australia.

2. Investor stream : To be eligible for this stream, you must invest a minimum of AUD 1.5 million in a state or territory of Australia and operate your business activity in Australia.

3. Significant investor stream: International individuals who invest a minimum of AUD 5 million in existing Australian investments are eligible for this visa. A State or Territory government agency of Australia or Austrade must nominate them.

4. Business innovation extension stream: Foreign nationals with this visa can extend their stay in Australia for an additional 2 years. To apply for an extension of at least three years, the applicant must be nominated by a State or Territory government agency of Australia or Austrade.

5. Significant investor extension stream: With this visa, you can extend your stay in Australia for another 4 years. For the extension, you must have had a qualifying visa of Significant Investor stream for a minimum of 3 years and be nominated by a State or Territory government agency of Australia or Austrade.

6. Premium Investor stream: It requires nomination by Austrade and an investment of a minimum of AUD 15 million in enterprises or philanthropic contributions in Australia.

7. Entrepreneur stream: the visa facilitates you in conducting your entrepreneurial activities in Australia.

Steps to apply for a provisional business visa

You must submit an EOI or expression of interest to the Australian Department of Home Affairs

Obtain a nomination from a state or territory of Australia or Austrade

After you receive an invitation, you must apply for a visa

The applicant’s business must fulfill any of the following activities:

  • Expand business links in international markets
  • Create employment opportunities in Australia
  • Use the goods and services of Australia for its business activities
  • Provide goods or services to replace the imported goods and services

The Business Innovation and Investment (Provisional) visa is called Subclass 188. It acts as a pathway for Australia PR.
