Why apply for Portugal Job Seeker Visa?

The Portuguese government introduced a new Job Seeker Visa on October 31, 2022, aimed at attracting foreign nationals to fill job vacancies and address labor shortages. This visa allows individuals to stay in Portugal for up to four months to seek employment, with the option to engage in work during this period.

Why Choose Portugal?

Portugal is known for its high quality of life, including:

  • Being ranked #4 on the Global Peace Index.
  • Progressive social policies and a supportive work environment.
  • Free healthcare and significant salary growth potential.
  • English proficiency is widespread, enhancing ease of integration.
  • Tax exemptions for immigrants with residence permits.

Visa Details

The Portugal Job Seeker Visa is valid for 120 days and can be extended by an additional 60 days. It is designed for single-entry use within the initial validity period, during which the holder must either secure employment or begin the process for a residence permit.

Visa Extension

Should you need to extend your visa, you must wait one year after your previous visa has expired before reapplying. Extension requests must be supported by evidence of continued eligibility and registration with the Portuguese Employment and Vocational Training Institute (IEFP).

Eligibility Criteria

To be eligible for the visa, applicants must:

  • Hold at least a Bachelor’s degree.
  • Have comprehensive health insurance.
  • Demonstrate sufficient funds to support their stay.
  • Provide proof of accommodation and return travel arrangements.
  • Submit general documentation including a signed national visa application, valid travel documents, and a criminal record certificate.

Required Documentation

Applicants should also provide:

  • A declaration of the conditions for their stay.
  • Proof of registration intent with the IEFP.
  • Travel insurance covering medical emergencies and potential repatriation.

Fees and Processing Time

  • Application fee for the visa issued by the Portuguese Embassy: €90 (varies by country).
  • Application fee for a skilled worker’s residence permit: €83.
  • Fee to obtain the residence permit: €72.

Processing typically takes two months, but applicants should apply at least a month before their intended travel date.

Steps to Apply for a Portugal Job Seeker Visa

  1. Evaluation: Assess your eligibility and gather necessary documents.
  2. Skills Review: Ensure your qualifications meet Portuguese standards.
  3. Preparation: Organize a checklist of requirements.
  4. Application Submission: Apply through the Portuguese Embassy.
  5. Relocation: Travel to Portugal to commence your job search.

Path to Permanent Residency

After living in Portugal for five years on a temporary residence permit, you can apply for permanent residency. This status opens up broader job opportunities without the need for a separate work permit and offers benefits akin to those enjoyed by Portuguese citizens.
