What is the Pathway for UK ILR to Citizenship?

You can apply for British citizenship after 12 months of being issued the UK ILR. To qualify for British citizenship, you must also complete a minimum of 5 years of residency in the UK. The UK ILR, or Indefinite Leave to Remain, is one of the requirements to become eligible for citizenship. As a British citizen, you can live, work, and study in the UK without any immigration-related restrictions. You can also apply for a British passport, which allows visa-free travel to 154 countries.

Eligibility Requirements for British Citizenship

You must fulfill the eligibility requirements below to apply for British citizenship.

• 18 years or above
• Reside in the UK for at least 5 years 
• Have a valid ILR status for at least 12 months
• Have at least B1, B2, C1, and C2 Levels of English language proficiency
• Take and clear the Life in the UK Test
• Maintain good character conduct
• Intent to continue to live in the UK

Note: If you have qualified for the Life in the UK test under your ILR application, you do not need to retake the test for naturalized British citizenship.
